Professional Career

I have been providing psychotherapy to adults and couples since 1992, and started my private practice in 2002.

My background speaks to my diverse interests and specialties.  I was affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs (Northern California) for over 15 years.  I am past clinical director of Pacific Center for Human Growth, a mental health clinic serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community in Berkeley.  I have also worked at the University of California, Berkeley counseling center, and have provided periodic trainings to their staff.  Additionally, I have provided numerous workshops on conducting depth-oriented psychotherapy, supervision, and working with specific psychological issues (please contact me for a list of courses taught) to various agencies.

"Patrick Neer was in a study group that I led and I have had the pleasure of seeing how his mind and heart work. He has a superior intellect which enables him to grasp how psychology is influencing the difficulties a patient is having. In addition, he is deeply empathic about patients’ suffering, always reaching to understand more deeply the sources of that suffering. He works creatively tofind ways to speak to the patient that promote self understanding. His deep feeling of respect for patients creates a feeling of safety in his consulting room. He is an exceptional clinician and I recommend him enthusiastically."
